About
the Artist
Sherry
Lawson has been fascinated with art since she was a child. In
particular, rendering figures and portraits has been a keen
interest and source of constant study. In fact, her first, real paid
commission was in high school. A talent that has developed
naturally and over many years of study, Sherry’s artistic
sensibility was channeled into her college pursuits by majoring in the
humanities in both undergraduate and graduate school. Almost every
subject she studied was examined with a humanities perspective,
delving into the influences of art, music, literature, history, and
culture in general.
After
graduate school where she earned an MA from
Clemson
University, Sherry started painting full time and has finished over
200 commissions nationwide. She has paintings in collections
nationwide and in Europe and include Clemson University, Abbeville
Historic Preservation Society, and numerous business and private
collections. An award winning artist who has been selected for inclusion
in juried shows and gallery exhibitions such as the Greenville Art Museum,
the Anderson County Arts Center, and the State Museum, Sherry is also
interested in arts education in the schools where she has taught gifted
and talented programs in visual arts.
Artist's Statement
My
criteria for a portrait are straightforward. Of the utmost importance, of
course, is likeness and many steps are taken to ensure that the likeness
is correct and that it is the view of the subject you wanted to capture.
In addition, a portrait should “feel” like the subject, carry an
emotional content, and evoke pleasant memories of him or her. The
focus and mood of a portrait are always on the subject and his or her
personality. Each portrait is painted as a window into the most
engaging and optimistic aspects of the subject. I paint in a
classical and time proven tradition to create a portrait of unique quality
and elegance. My
portraits come with an assurance of satisfaction. The portrait
commission is a process in which my client and I work together from
the very inception of the portrait, through the photographs and
preliminary sketches, to the final touches on the portrait. I want
to ensure that you are satisfied with every stage of the process: in this
way I know that the final portrait will be the kind of portrait and fine
art that we both have envisioned.
